I came across an interesting poster in one of the classrooms a couple of years ago while invigilating a class for examination. It was a picture of a bamboo forest which was entitled "Potential". I was amazed to learn that some species of bamboo spend 4-5 years in very slow growth and then on the sixth year, they grow with staggering speed. One can almost see it grow when it climbs almost a metre in a day! The main thing that drew my attention was not just the biological reasons to this unusual growth habit but the amount of potential these plants possess for growth. This is what I want to use to speak some of my classes.

There are some people who are just like me: ever trying but growing slowly. It is not uncommon to see people overtaking me in learning a skill or playing a sports. It can be discouraging to feel left behind in life and know that there is a glass ceiling above me. For a long time, I could only see what I could have possibly achieved but I either never arrive or took a longer time than I should be. The reason as to why I took some detours is not an issue here, but the important thing is: I am finally going somewhere...finally.

So what's my point? Don't get discouraged or become impatient with yourselves because you have not yet seen results in the thing you are striving at. The principle of reaping what you sow is just as true as the Law of Gravity. If you do the right thing, then give yourselves time. Growth will come. Sometime and somewhere in life, you will harvest the dividends of your right and persistent effort.

Most students in my classes, especially those in the Pure Sciences, rarely see significant improvement in Physics grades until the O Level examinations are approaching. Many who used to fail tests will either pass or attain distinctions eventually. You see, some things like Physics concepts will take time to "mature". I shan't write all about why I think it is like that here. My main point is, give yourselves time but do the right thing and take the right steps. Be it studies, establishing meaningful relationships, or picking up a skill, do remember the bamboo principle. Don't be impatient with yourselves and don't give up.
